Steamy, stormy weather forecast for New Jersey
High humidity will lead to downright tropical conditions for the next several days, as New Jersey readies for some unsettled, wet weather through the end of the week.
Here are your weather headlines for Wednesday, August 19, 2015...
Wednesday: Steamy, Few Shower
I'm happy to say that our streak of 90° temperatures is over! Yesterday was New Jersey's 5th and final 90° day, as clouds will keep temperatures a few degrees cooler over the next few days.
However... even though temperatures will be a bit cooler, the humidity is still going to be very high over the next several days. With dew points holding in the 70s, we'll definitely experience some tropical, steamy, and/or oppressive weather. (Go ahead and pick your favorite word to describe this atmospheric soup!)
New Jersey will see partly sunny skies for the first part of Wednesday, but then we'll have some unsettled weather moving in. I expect a few showers and thunderstorms to pop up this afternoon. Models show the best rain chances to be in the western half of the state, between about 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. These storms will be hit-or-miss (mostly miss), and should not become too strong.
Thursday-Friday: Steadier Rain
I'm keeping a chance for stray/isolated showers in the forecast for Wednesday night through the daytime hours on Thursday. The best rain chance of the week, however, will come Thursday evening through Friday morning. We'll see the first raindrops fall between about 6 p.m. and Midnight on Thursday, and I think just about everyone in the state is apt to see a period of steady rain through 8 a.m. Friday. The threat for showers and thunderstorms continue for part of (if not most of) Friday. We could see some clearing of the skies from west to east by Friday afternoon and evening, but it's not a sure bet. In fact, showers could carry over right into the upcoming weekend...
The Weekend: Still Unsettled
While the forecast has improved for the upcoming weekend, it is unfortunately not going to be picture-perfect. At the moment, scattered showers will serve as bookends to the weekend - for both Saturday morning and Sunday evening. In between the rain chances, we'll enjoy a few breaks of sun. While temperatures will be bearable, in the lower to mid 80s, the humidity will remain pretty disgusting.
Beyond: Cooler & Drier, Tropical Storm?
Beyond this week's showers, storms, and humidity, our attention turns to a good-looking cold front scheduled to push through New Jersey early Tuesday. There doesn't seem to be much rain activity associated with the front, and highs temperatures don't seem to budge much for Tuesday afternoon and beyond. However, we'll bid a not-so-fond farewell to the horrendously high humidity as our weather becomes much more comfortable. In fact, thanks to that influx of dry air, the models are even hinting at some Wednesday morning temperatures in the 40s in North Jersey?
Finally, we now have our fourth tropical storm of the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season. Tropical Storm Danny is way out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Danny (great name, by the way!) is expected to strength into a hurricane soon, setting sights on the eastern Caribbean islands on Monday morning. (Not a great time to take a cruise...) It is still way too early to determine whether Danny will have any impacts on New Jersey's weather or surf.
