State trooper injured in Newark car theft
Police are still searching for a suspect they say stole a car from a rental lot in Newark and crashed into an unmarked State Police vehicle before fleeing on foot.
ABC 7 reports an off-duty police officer from Lumberton, working a security detail at the Alamo lot on Frelinghuysen Avenue near Newark Liberty Airport and fired shots at the suspect as he drove a Chevrolet Tahoe off the lot.
The thief then ran head-on into an unmarked State Police SUV and drove off, abandoning the vehicle on Ninth Street.
The officer suffered a head injury in the collision was hospitalized at University Hospital in Newark.
Police have centered their search on the Newark-East Orange line according to the station and are using dogs to search the yards of nearby homes.
