Union County prosecutors say 49-year-old John Antonucci of Fanwood was taken into custody around 7 a.m. Saturday, about seven hours after the standoff began at a borough residence. But it's still not clear what sparked the incident.

Police responded to the Locust Avenue home after a neighbor called 911 and reported shots had been fired around 11 p.m. Friday. When officers arrived on scene, Antonucci allegedly started yelling at them and was seen in a window brandishing his weapon. He then allegedly fired shots at the officers who returned fire, but no injuries were reported during the standoff.

The incident also shut down New Jersey Transit's Raritan Valley Line in both directions because Antonucci allegedly fired shots toward the train tracks. Buses were used to transport passengers while the standoff was ongoing, but the rail service soon resumed after Antonucci was captured.

Authorities said Antonucci was alone in the home and had more than a dozen short and long barrel firearms inside his home. He's expected to face multiple weapons charges and other offenses, and it was not known if he has retained a lawyer.
