Energy expert Cory Byzewski of Direct Energy says homeowners should be thinking in terms of sealing up cracks and leaks. He says a little bit of caulking can go a long way. Byzewski says that for as little as 20 dollars, you can easily save as much as $120 on your heating.

Also, he says you can turn down the heater thermostat two degrees and save four percent on your heating bill. Byzewski says that may mean wearing a sweater, but it certainly will save a bunch of money.

Byzewski has also announced that $100,000 in grants will be awarded by Direct Energy to help local charitable organizations reduce energy usage. The “Reduce Your Use for Good” program will award a $2,500 grant to 40 charities that submit video on how the grant can help them reduce their energy usage.

Byzewski says you can also change the direction on your ceiling fan. For the colder months, blades should turn clockwise to push the warm air from the ceiling down into the room. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates the average home could save up to 25 percent of their energy bill with a few small changes.
