The pair was swimming at an unguarded beach on Monday afternoon when they got into trouble. Bystanders alerted nearby lifeguards who quickly rescued one person, but it took 20 minutes to find the other swimmer.

The Asbury Park Press identifies the victim as 18-year-old Kevin Searfoss of Rockaway who was unconscious when he was pulled from the surf without a pulse. Lifeguards performed CPR and took him to Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch.

There was a moderate risk of rip currents posted on Monday by the National Weather Service, which means swimmers were allowed to only go in the water up to their knees.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
