Rutgers saves $300K after cutting cafeteria trays
NEW BRUNSWICK (AP) — Rutgers University says it has saved $300,000 in the first 10 weeks since it eliminated trays in three student dining halls.
Officials say the new policy has lowered the costs of food and dish washing.
Rutgers Dining Services director Joseph Charette tells the Home News Tribune the school has seen a 20 percent reduction in the amount of food that students throw out after they eat.
Rutgers eliminated trays this semester at the Neilson, Busch and Livingston dining halls on the New Brunswick campus. Trays are still available at Brower Commons, which would have to be redesigned to get rid of the trays.
Some students have complained it's hard to balance all the food they want to take.
