Rutgers President Barchi to Answer Budget Questions
Rutgers President Robert Barchi is set to go before an Assembly budget panel, when he may be asked about payouts given to three university officials ousted during a basketball coaching scandal.
Basketball coach Mike Rice, athletic director Tim Pernetti and a university lawyer received severances worth between $420,000 and $1.2 million. Rice was fired after a video of him throwing balls at players and hurling gay slurs aired on ESPN.
Barchi is being called before the panel Thursday to answer questions about $487 million in state aid to Rutgers.
The panel is also planning a separate hearing on the Rutgers scandal.
Barchi will also be asked to explain why the university's Newark and Camden campuses don't have their own budgets after a law was signed last year requiring fiscal autonomy.
