President Robert Barchi announced Tuesday that Jorge Reina Schement will lead the council of diversity and inclusion. He will start his new job July 1 and will work across campuses in Newark, New Brunswick and Camden.

Schement now serves as dean of the School of Communication and Information in New Brunswick.

The council will focus on attracting and retaining diverse faculty, staff and students. It also will address issues of diversity, equity and inclusion on campus.

The council will also fund research and coordinate and support diversity programs.

At a Rutgers' Board of Governor's meeting last week, Barchi said he was surprised the school did not already have such an office, so he created one.
