The U.S. Department of Education announced the $7.8 million 2-year grant for Rutgers on Thursday.

Rutgers plans to use the money to develop merit pay systems for the school districts in Asbury Park, Hillside, Lakewood and North Plainfield.

Gov. Chris Christie has been pushing the idea of merit pay to allow teachers who get the best evaluations to earn more.

Rutgers was one of 35 recipients of the federal Teacher Incentive Fund grants announced Thursday.
