Report of armed intruder at school apparently a hoax, police say

HOLMDEL, N.J. (AP) -- Authorities say a report about an armed intruder at a central New Jersey school appears to have been a hoax.

Monmouth County prosecutors say a dozen law enforcement agencies responded to the Village Elementary School in Holmdel after someone called the school shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday and said the intruder was at the building. School officials immediately called township police and put the school on lockdown.

Law enforcement officials performed a sweep of the building, and the school was soon evacuated. The building was deemed safe about three hours after the call was received, and students were allowed to return to their classrooms.

Authorities say students were not in danger and no injuries were reported during the incident.
