Raritan panel votes to place Flemington merger on ballot
RARITAN (AP) — Raritan Township residents will be asked whether the town should start discussing a possible merger with Flemington.
Flemington was part of Raritan until it went on its own in 1910. But the towns already share a school district and recreation program.
The Raritan committee voted 4-1 to place the non-binding referendum on November's ballot.
Raritan Mayor Craig O'Brien tells the Courier News a positive vote could be the beginning of a multi-step process that could eventually lead to merger referendums in both towns.
However, O'Brien says the process would end if the referendum is defeated.
Flemington's council is expected to discuss the issue on Monday.
