Port Authority Spokesman Joe Pentangelo said the accident occurred around 8:45 a.m. Monday, when the 47-year-old inspector -- who works for an outside firm -- apparently slipped and fell about 15 feet.

The man suffered injuries to his ankle and right leg and couldn't walk, so police crews had to carefully descend about 200 steep, slick steps that were partially iced. They eventually hoisted the man up to emergency responders, who took him to a hospital.

The man's name was not released, and further details on his condition were not disclosed.

The rescue took about two hours to complete.
