Pedestrian struck, killed by box truck while crossing street

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Authorities have released the name of a man who was run over and killed by a box truck this weekend while trying to cross a Newark street.

Essex County prosecutors say Helder Andrade Rodrigues, a 41-year-old city resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident occurred around 2 p.m. Saturday in the 700 block of Broadway. Authorities said Rodrigues was crossing the road moments before the accident occurred, and they said he may have fallen in front of the truck.

The truck driver remained at the scene, and no charges have been filed against him.
The accident remains under investigation.
