A quick moving storm blanketed south and central New Jersey with a quick couple of inches just in time for the morning commute.

Many districts are delaying the opening of school as some secondary roads are slippery and icy. National Weather Service reports show 4 inches fell in Malaga in Gloucester County and 3 inches of snow in southern Ocean County.  2 inches fell in many areas of Monmouth County. Only a trace, however, was reported in Morris County.

A Winter Weather Weather Advisory is in effect until 8 a.m. is in effect for Ocean, Burlington, Atlantic and Cumberland Counties for 2-4 inches of snow.

Highways and interstates are slippery as well, with speeds reduced on the Garden State Parkway between Cape May and exit #129 in Woodbridge. The Atlantic City Expressway speed restriction is at 35 MPH for the entire length while the length of the New Jersey Turnpike is at 45 MPH.

Meanwhile, rarely-used snowplows have been getting a workout in parts of the Deep South, which is blanketed by up to 3 inches of snow in some areas.

The plows didn’t seem to do much good Tuesday in the Atlanta area, where the they couldn’t get through bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Georgia State Patrol says it responded to at least 940 crashes throughout the state, and there was at least one fatality and more than 100 injuries.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal said early Wednesday that the National Guard was sending military Humvees onto Atlanta’s snarled freeway system in an attempt to move stranded school buses and get food and water to people. Georgia State Patrol troopers headed to schools where children were hunkered down early Wednesday after spending the night there, and transportation crews continued to treat roads and bring gas to motorists, Deal said.
