Options Remain For Those Who Did Not Submit SBA Forms [AUDIO]

If it looks like you will miss tomorrow’s (May 1st) deadline to hand in SBA applications, there are still options available to homeowners, renters, and businesses needing help recovering from Sandy.

Roughly 480 non-profit groups are available in most of the communities most severely affected by storm damage according to Cathy McCann, chairwoman of NJ Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster.

McCann says the groups have come together and in many cases pooled their resources and are working with volunteers from across the country wanting to help rebuild.

“These long-term recovery groups have construction committees and fundraising committees and work closely with the New Jersey Sandy Relief Fund.”

Individuals wishing to get assistance from one of these groups should dial 211 to speak with a case worker, notes McCann. From there, it can be determined what resources they are eligible for, be it funding or otherwise.

“There is volunteer help to help in rebuilding in some cases and there are priorities based on income and abilities to do it yourself or have someone come to help.”

Even though the SBA has been accepting loan applications for six months following Sandy, McCann says residents often are not sure whether to apply right away due for a variety of reasons.

“What is the difficulty of raising their homes? What are the new flood maps, and what do they have to do? So there are still a lot of people still deciding what the best thing for them to do is.”
