Middlesex County prosecutors say their investigation determined the officer's use of deadly force was justified.

Talbot Schroeder was killed at his Old Bridge home in January.

Authorities have said the 75-year-old man was armed with a knife and repeatedly ignored police commands to drop his knife. They also said he threatened the officer with the knife, having already exhibited a willingness to use it by slitting his wrists and stabbing himself.

Prosecutors say the officer shot Schroeder after the officer was forced into a position in which he could not retreat. The officer's name has not been released.
