Police in New Jersey's largest city are mourning a colleague.

Authorities say Newark Police Detective Michael Morgan was shot and killed during a robbery while off duty in Paterson early Monday.

Law enforcement officials tell The Record newspaper that Morgan and a dancer were leaving the Sunrise Gentlemen's Lounge around 3 a.m. when they were approached by a man brandishing a gun who demanded money.

Police believe the gunman and the 32-year-old detective may have struggled before the robber fired one shot, striking the detective in his side.

Several law enforcement groups are offering a total of $25,000 in reward money for the arrest of the person who shot and killed the six-year veteran of the force.
