A co-worker reported to police a “hazardous device” he spotted inside a van on 36th Street on Tuesday afternoon according to the Ocean City Gazette, which reports the van belonged to Zachary Kranefeld, 21, of Millville. He told police the devices were smoke grenades he learned to make from watching YouTube videos.

Ocean County Police Captain Steve Ang tells the Gazette that two devices were found inside the van. The Atlantic City Bomb Squad and K-9 units were called in and police spoke to Kranefeld, who Ang said was co-operative.

Police also searched his home in Millville and at Strathmere in New York State where Kranefeld is a student.

Kranefeld was arrested and charged with possession of a prohibited device and was released with a summons.

On Tuesday the Atlantic City Bomb Squad cleared the area around the lifeguard stand at 36th Street according to WPVI TV where the devices were exploded.
