“Occupy Newark” Protesters Say Eviction Delayed

Occupy Newark protesters are still camped out at a downtown park despite an eviction notice from the city.

The group has occupied Military Park since mid-November. The city clerk’s office sent the group a letter on Tuesday telling them they would have to leave by 9 p.m. Thursday.

A few dozen protesters had gathered Thursday night. Several said they had been told they would have until Saturday to leave the park.

In December, the city council adopted an ordinance to give the group permission to stay in the park, and the most recent extension was to expire this week.

A police spokesman didn’t immediately return an e-mail message Thursday night.
