The next enrollment period to get health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act begins in November, but there is special enrollment eligibility for those who have experienced life-changing events.

"If you have a life-changing event, your health care coverage does not have to lapse," said Alescia Teel, New Jersey's communications lead for Get Covered America, a national campaign effort aimed at educating Americans about Obamacare. "If you lose your job, if you move, if you experience a divorce, if you experience marriage or add a child to your family -- you now have the opportunity to get covered today."

The loss of a job is one such event which could be of great interest to thousands of Atlantic City casino workers who could find themselves out of work if Revel, Showboat and Trump Plaza close their doors.

Another group that would be eligible for the special enrollment would be those who have turned 26 years old, and thus have aged out of their parents' coverage.

"You have 60 days from the life-changing event to make the decision to get covered," Teel said. "Eighty-four percent of New Jerseyans who have enrolled in health care through the federal marketplace have received financial help."

The next open enrollment period is November 15 through February 15.  People eligible for Medicaid can enroll year-round.

Those interested in enrolling can do so by phone at 1-800-318-2596 or online at  healthcare.gov.
