In last night's Los Angeles Angels vs. Oakland A's game, perhaps the scariest thing you could see on the field happened. Luckily, everything seems to be okay.

During the top of the fourth inning, Angels shortstop Erick Aybar hit a ball up the middle and Oakland A's pitcher Brandon McCarthy happened to be in the wrong spot at the wrong time. The ball drilled McCarthy in the head and ricocheted all the way to third base.

Check out the video of the scariest play in baseball in the video below.

I'm sure McCarthy will undergo extensive concussion testing in the coming days. I always get shocked when I see this happen on the field.

UPDATE, ACCORDING TO MLB.COM:

The A's said in a release on Thursday that McCarthy had undergone surgery to alleviate pressure in his head Wednesday night after a CT Scan revealed an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture.

I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. The pitcher has no protection on the mound and he's so close to home plate that it just seems natural that it would be more of a common occurrence.
