No NJ Open Space Question On This Year’s Ballot

New Jersey voters won’t be deciding on long-term funding for open space this fall.

The Senate fell two votes shy of the super-majority needed to get the question on the November ballot in day-long voting Monday.

The resolution that would ask voters to dedicate up to $200 million a year to open space from sales tax revenue was approved 22-8.

The question would have gotten on the ballot this year if 24 out of 40 senators and 48 out of 80 Assembly members OK’d it.

Alternately, it can get on the ballot next year if simple majorities of 21 and 41 approve it this year and next.

Democrats in favor of the proposal blamed Gov. Chris Christie for strong-arming Republicans out of voting for it. Christie denied influencing the vote.
