KEARNY, N.J. (AP) -- State police say a New Jersey Turnpike maintenance employee has been struck and killed on the roadway.

The New Jersey Turnpike runs by Newark Airport (NJ DOT)

The accident occurred Thursday morning at about 10:30 a.m. in Kearny. Police say Turnpike employee Anthony Gallone of Garfield pulled over onto the shoulder of the northbound lanes to pick up a piece of tire from the roadway.

Gallone's pickup truck had its overhead amber lights illuminated at the time.

Police say a box truck driven by a 20-year-old Howell man and his 54-year-old passenger was traveling in the right lane and struck Gallone.

The 32-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident is under investigation and no charges have been filed.
