The accident occurred Thursday morning at about 10:30 a.m. in Kearny. Police say Turnpike employee Anthony Gallone of Garfield pulled over onto the shoulder of the northbound lanes to pick up a piece of tire from the roadway.

Gallone's pickup truck had its overhead amber lights illuminated at the time.

Police say a box truck driven by a 20-year-old Howell man and his 54-year-old passenger was traveling in the right lane and struck Gallone.

The 32-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident is under investigation and no charges have been filed.
