NJ Transit to Vote on Ending Free Rides for Employees

Free rides on New Jersey Transit trains and buses may be coming to an end for some of the agency's employees.

NJ Transit says it is planning to change its policy of allowing its employees unlimited free travel.

Under a new proposal, non-union employees and non-union retirees won't be able to ride free of charge for non-business purposes. The new rules would go into effect on January 1.

The agency said in a release Monday that the proposal is part of Gov. Chris Christie's emphasis on accountability to taxpayers. NJ Transit's board will vote on the proposal Oct. 15.

Similar measures have been approved by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, Delaware River Port Authority and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
