PSE&G officials say the outages are the result of several underground circuits failing. No one was injured in the explosion, which occurred around 9:50 a.m. Friday.

PSE&G says restoration could take several hours.

The outages are affecting the Newark campuses of Rutgers University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology, as well as the Newark Housing Authority.

University officials have had to move some classes or evacuate buildings that lost power.

The outages also temporarily affected a small area of Newark's Penn Station, but NJ Transit officials say power was only out for about two minutes Friday morning. New Jersey Transit and PATH service was not affected.

PSE&G says no residential customers in Newark are affected.
