The new year brings higher toll rates on the Garden State Parkway & New Jersey Turnpike.For the second time in three years, toll rates went up on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway. The latest increases went  into effect on New Year's Day at 6:30AM.

Tolls will rise an average of about 50 percent on both roads.

That means people driving the length of turnpike will pay $13.85 instead of $9.05 one-way. The additional revenue is to be used to fund road and bridge improvements.

The rate increase come just four months after the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey jacked up tolls on bridges and tunnels into New York by 50 percent.
