More Thunderstorms Expected For New Jersey

It’s another hot and humid day in New Jersey meaning another round of strong thunderstorms are expected today and throughout the weekend as June sets a weather record.As storms develop and move east to west a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for central and southern counties in New Jersey including Atlantic, Cape May, Mercer, Salem, Burlington, Cumberlane, Monmouth, Ocean, Camden & Gloucester counties until 9 p.m.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was posted for Gloucester County as a small cell with 60 mph wind gusts moved across the county.A Flash Flood Warning was also posted for Gloucester County.

Wind gusts reached 61 mph in Gibbstown according to a post on the National Weather Service/Mt.Holly Facebook page.

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has New Jersey at a slight risk of severe weather this afternoon with the biggest threat being isolated damaging wind and large hail will be the main threats into early evening.

A Flash Flood Watch for parts of Bergen, Essex, Passaic and Union counties has been cancelled.

A Warning means that conditions are favorable for the formation of severe storms.

The heavy rains of Thursday made New Jersey’s average rainfall 9.2 inches, breaking a 2003 recird if 8.61 inches state climatologist David Robinson tells the Star Ledger.

Robinson also expects the current pattern of thunderstorms to continue through the weekend and into next week until Thursday, the Fourth of July because lots of tropical moisture continues to affect the state.
