Assemblyman Ruben Ramos Jr., who chairs the Regulatory Oversight and Gaming Committee, says expanding gambling options to the Meadowlands could strengthen New Jersey against competition  from nearby states.

Gov. Chris Christie and state Senate President Stephen Sweeney have opposed the idea. They want to give an Atlantic City revitalization plan time to turn around the fortunes of the city's slumping casinos.

Assemblyman Ralph Caputo is sponsoring a bill that would ask voters to amend the state constitution to allow casinos in Bergen County.

The committee will not consider any bills during a hearing next week at the Meadowlands Racetrack.
