The Governor’s Council will honor Matthau for his work in raising awareness of mental health issues in New Jersey.

This year, the council has chosen to recognize "individuals in the media who champion mental health awareness, educate the public about mental illness and engage our communities in the process of embracing mental health in broadcast, print and online mediums." Those selected as award recipients have "demonstrated sensitivity, insight, and presentation of information that de-stigmatizes mental illness," according to the council.

In his series, "NJ Children Confronting Mental Illness" Matthau, an on-air reporter at NJ 101.5 radio, examines mental health issues among children. The stories explore why so many children are being diagnosed with mental illnesses, how parents can recognize some of the most common conditions and how organizations within the state work to educate NJ residents about various types of conditions.
