JERSEY CITY — A man who was trying to break into cars ran from officers on foot into a hi-rise apartment building and into a trash compactor — where he was found with broken legs, according to a report.

An unnamed police source told NJ.com the man ran into the building after being found by police with a knife in the Newport section of the city. Police found the man inside the compactor, howling in pain, but did not locate the knife, the source told the News site.

The man could heard screaming as he was treated in an ambulance for compound fractures of both legs, according to the report.
