ALLENHURST (AP) — Major beach replenishment projects are getting underway along New Jersey's northernmost and southernmost oceanfront.

But not all of them will include protective Sand dunes that worked so well in Superstorm Sandy — and doomed many places that did not have them when the storm hit.

The reason: Congress did not authorize anything other than restoring what was there when Sandy hit.

New Jersey is asking the federal government to reconsider and add dunes to the project, but for now, they are not part of the Monmouth County work.

Beach widening started Thursday afternoon in Cape May County, including Ocean City.

It's also about to start north of Asbury Park in Allenhurst, Loch Arbour and Deal.
