Heavy rain this morning, strong storms possible later
Umbrellas, windshield wipers, and headlights will see heavy use on this pretty wet Tuesday, with rain expected both in the morning and the evening.
Here are your weather headlines for Tuesday, August 11, 2015...
Rain This Morning
As expected, an approaching storm system and associated warm front has brought moderate to heavy rain to New Jersey this morning. Everyone in the state is likely to get drenched at some point during these early morning hours, with maximum rainfall totals reaching about an inch. There really isn't a severe weather concern from this morning's rain (aside from localized flooding of low-lying areas), but your morning commute will likely be slow and wet.
Eventually, the steady rain will taper off by about lunchtime at the latest, and we might even see a few breaks in the clouds. (Although at any given time today, I wouldn't be surprised to see it raining *somewhere* in the Garden State.) The midday break in the rainfall action will help high temperatures bump into the lower 80s at least for a short time through the early afternoon. Meanwhile, it's going to feel quite muggy, with dew points in the sticky 70s today. But at least the humidity is only temporary...
Storms This Evening
A cold front associated with this storm system will push through New Jersey later today - probably in the 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. time frame. As it does, another round of rain is possible statewide. The late afternoon/evening rainfall will likely take the form of a broken line of showers and thunderstorms (so, not as steady nor as widespread as this morning's rain). Instability will be limited, as sunshine/heat today will be limited... but I can't rule out these storms reaching strong to severe limits (only threats would be gusty winds and heavy rain). The Storm Prediction Center has New Jersey in a "Marginal Risk" for severe weather today because of this evening convection.
Rain should taper off by about Midnight tonight, and skies should start to clear in the early Wednesday morning hours. With drier air moving in, overnight low temperatures should fall into the comfortable 60s across the state.
I doubt I have to mention it, but today will not be a happy day at the beach or on the water: surf will be quite rough, with 4 to 5 foot waves and a moderate risk of rip currents.
Clear Weather Ahead
High pressure starts to take over New Jersey's atmosphere on Wednesday, which spells clearer and more pleasant weather through the rest of the workweek. However, as a weak impulse rides through southern New York Wednesday afternoon, we could conceivably see a few light showers or sprinkles (especially in North Jersey). Having said that, most of Wednesday looks nice, with partly to mostly sunny skies and seasonable high temperatures in the mid 80s.
Thursday looks great, with plenty of sunshine and pleasant high temperatures in the lower 80s.
On Friday, we'll add a few extra clouds to the forecast and bump temperatures into the mid to upper 80s. We then transition into a somewhat unsettled pattern Friday night, with occasional showers potentially persisting in New Jersey through the weekend.
