Bergen County prosecutors announced Monday that 22-year-old Robert Leonardis of Hackensack has been charged with three counts of attempted murder on a police officer and weapons offenses stemming from the July 22 shooting.

Authorities say Leonardis fled when confronted by two officers. They say he later opened fire on a patrol car with a bullet going through the windshield, narrowly missing an officer.

Two officers returned fire and two other officers joined the foot pursuit. All four officers fired, striking Leonardis numerous times.

Leonardis was critically wounded and remains hospitalized. His bail was set at $1.5 million cash.
