Goya opening headquarters built with help of New Jersey tax credits

JERSEY CITY (AP) — Goya Foods is officially opening its new headquarters in Jersey City.

Gov. Chris Christie is among the dignitaries expected at the ceremony on Wednesday for the new facility, which is receiving $82 million in state tax credits to help pay for the company's move from nearby Secaucus.

The firm had considered moving to Long Island before the state Economic Development Authority approved the incentives in 2012.

The company is donating to local food pantries, paying to build a school playground and funding a scholarship in honor of the event.

The food firm is also moving some jobs from Long Island and plans to have 500 employees at the new site.

The liberal think tank New Jersey Policy Perspective says the tax break represents "misplaced priorities."
