Fox announced Tuesday that Kelly will host a prime-time special in May, featuring celebrity interviews from politics and entertainment. One of Fox News' biggest stars has increased her profile in recent months with her no-holds-barred debate moderating performances.

The network said it has hired television executive Bill Geddie, formerly Barbara Walters' right-hand man at "The View," to produce the special.

It's not hard to imagine Kelly getting more such opportunities if the May 23 special goes well. With Walters' retirement, no one has inherited her mantle as a go-to person for celebrity television interviews.

For one night at least, the special will put Kelly in direct competition with Fox News' Bill O'Reilly.
