WESTAMPTON — An early morning incident left one woman dead and closed a section of the New Jersey Turnpike on Sunday.

Trooper Lawrence Peele of the NJ State Police said a female entered the southbound Turnpike on foot near Exit 5 in Westhampton around 3:15 a.m and was struck by a vehicle. She was declared dead at the scene.

The driver remained at the scene and was not injured, according to Peale, who did not disclose the identity of either person involved.

Peale said the incident remains under investigation as to how the female got onto the highway, but said she did not jump off an overpass.
