If you'd like to have insurance under the Affordable Care Act that goes into effect on Jan. 1, you need to enroll by Dec. 23.

The problems with the healthcare.gov website have been well documented, but most of the glitches have been fixed. The enrollment process can still be complicated and confusing for many, but there is free help available.

"There are organizations throughout pretty much all of the communities in New Jersey with people who will walk them through the enrollment process," Enroll America's New Jersey Director Justine Ceserano said. "If they're really technologically savvy they can also just go on the website themselves."

Those interested in enrolling can do so by phone at 1-800-318-2596 where help is available in 150 languages. Enrollment can also be done online at healthcare.gov or with in-person help locally. To find local, trained in-person help go to healthcare.gov, find the green tab that reads "local help" and plug-in your zip code.

"Another thing I think people need to know is many times financial assistance is available to them," Ceserano explained. "There's a calculator that exists on healthcare.gov that will assist in letting you know how much assistance you would qualify for in terms of payments in your premiums and also in tax subsidies."

If you need more time to weigh your options you have until March 31, 2014 to enroll in a health insurance plan.

"You have until March 31 however if you apply let's say in mid-January your benefits won't kick in on Feb. 1, but March 1 instead," Ceserano said. "That's a personal decision that each individual can make for themselves based on their individual needs."

Enroll America's "Get Covered America Campaign" is a national outreach effort to empower uninsured and underinsured Americans by educating them about their new options for affordable, quality health care coverage through the ACA. In the Garden State there are an estimated 900,000 eligible uninsured New Jerseyans.

If you are looking for additional information, because this is a big decision and the first time many will have insurance coverage, check out GetCoveredAmerica.org for events in your area that will provide you with in-person information on enrollment options.
