NEW BRUNSWICK — A gas leak forced the evacuation of part of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and a school on Thursday.

City spokeswoman Jennifer Bradshaw said the leak originated in a construction project in front of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital on Somerset Street in the early afternoon.

The Lincoln Street Annex also was evacuated.  CBS New York reported the emergency room was evacuated by the leak under the ambulance ramp near Somerset and Little Albany streets.

Bradshaw said Somerset Street was closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic around the hospital between Louis Street and Easton Avenue, but have since been reopened.

Messages left for representatives at RWJUH have not yet been returned.
