Authorities say an elderly couple found dead inside their southern New Jersey home died in an apparent murder-suicide.

Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy tells the Asbury Park Press of Neptune that 88-year-old George Spangler and his 85-year-old wife, Anna, were found around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in their living room by a Meals on Wheels employee, who immediately notified police in the Ocean County community.

Mastronardy said both victims had been shot, and a gun was recovered at the scene.

Further details were not immediately disclosed. But a neighbor told the newspaper that Anna Spangler had been very ill.
