Winter weather has arrived in New Jersey and surprisingly, many motorists in the Garden State are traveling the highways and byways unprepared, according to a new survey by State Farm which found 67 percent of drivers had some sort of junk, or non-emergency supplies, in their trunk.

"We found things like gorilla suits and suits of armor in the trunks of cars," said Dave Phillips, spokesperson for State Farm. "One individual had about 60 watermelons in the vehicle. More mainstream items included beach umbrellas and food and drink containers. Some people just hadn't taken summer items out of their trunks in preparation for the colder weather."

Phillips said winter weather can change in an instant and can bring heavy snow, dangerous ice and some tough driving conditions, which is why it is important for motorists to be prepared in the event of an emergency. Among the important roadside items State Farm suggests motorists have in their trunks:

  • Hazard triangle (with reflectors) or road flares
  • First aid kit
  • Jumper cables
  • Windshield scraper and brush
  • Spare tire
  • Blankets and extra warm clothing
  • Cell phone and charger
  • High-calorie, non-perishable food
  • Water
  • Road salt or cat litter to help with tire traction
  • Brightly colored distress sign, or "Help" or "Call Police" flag
  • Candle/matches, lighter, and/or flashlight
  • Tarp for sitting or kneeling in the snow for exterior work, like a tire change

It is also important to check your spare tire twice a year to make sure it has enough air.

"We often check our regular tires when the temperatures drop and they lose air pressure, but it's that spare that gets neglected time and time again," Phillips said. "When it comes to jumper cables, they are important to have, but it's also important for people to know how to connect them."
