Monday's move is the latest setback in an injury-filled season for the captain. It came on the same day teammate Alex Rodriguez was suspended through the 2014 season by Major League Baseball in a drug case.

With Jeter going on the DL, the Yankees recalled infielder Dave Adams from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. They also designated infielder Brent Lillibridge for assignment, and Rodriguez was activated from the disabled list.

The 39-year-old Jeter did not play Saturday or Sunday at San Diego. He appeared to take an awkward step while making a play in Friday night's 7-2 loss. He also had an awkward slide into third base.
