Just over a third of New Jerseyans plan to be out of town this summer for more than five consecutive days, according to a new survey. Instead, the day trip appears to be the getaway of choice.

In the survey from AAA, 67 percent of New Jersey residents say they plan to take at least one day trip to the Jersey Shore.

“While many may not be able to take off for long vacations, it’s clear that New Jerseyans are making sure to take full advantage of the summer weather by squeezing in shorter trips throughout the summer,” AAA Northeast's Cathleen Lewis said in a news release. “That’s good news for Jersey Shore businesses.”

Twenty-one percent of survey respondents plan to take two to three trips to the shore for the day. Fifteen percent say more than five day trips are in the works.

Diane Wieland, director of tourism in Cape May County, said day trips are a "very big part" of business for the county. While these visitors aren't utilizing the hotels or staying for a longer period of time, a pleasant quick trip could plant the seed for a longer visit in the future.

"A lot of people in our research say they came for a day trip, found they really liked it, and in the next year or so they plan a longer vacation," Wieland said.

An overwhelming majority of visitors come for the beach and boardwalk, Wieland noted, but the county offers plenty of "non-beach" attractions, such as birding, ecotourism and boutique shopping.

Among those in the survey who plan to vacation for five days or longer, 38 percent say the Jersey Shore is their destination; 21 percent are headed to Monmouth and Ocean counties, and 17 percent to Atlantic and Cape May counties.
