The officer, 43-year-old Mervyn Davis of Newark, was shot early Tuesday, just after he left a business in the city's South Ward.

Davis was being treated at a hospital, but further details on his injuries -- including how many times he was shot and where he was hit -- were not disclosed.

The person who tried to rob Davis remained at large Tuesday afternoon. Authorities did not say what, if anything, the robber took from Davis.

The county's major crimes task force is leading the investigation.
