An attempt to arrest a 25-year-old woman in Manchester ended with her boyfriend shot dead by police, as the two first barricaded themselves in a mobile home and then the man threatened officers with a knife, authorities said.

The Office of the Attorney General is continuing to investigate the shooting, as it does all officer-involved shootings in the state.

According to the OAG, Manchester police went to the Pine Acres mobile home around midnight to execute an arrest warrant for Shyna Palmieri. But when they tried to execute the warrant, authorities said, she and 27-year-old boyfriend Michael Laniado barricaded themselves in the home.

Inside, officers heard sounds of objects being thrown around and smashed, as well as screaming, according to the OAG. The couple began throwing large objects — including appliances and a spear — out at police, it said. They retreated and called in the Ocean County Regional SWAT Team, the OAG said.

A hostage negotiator tried and failed to convince the two to surrender peacefully, authorities said. When officers sent a robot with a cell phone into the home, they heard Laniado threatening to harm Palmieri, the OAG said.

Officers fired tear gas into the home, and Laniado came out, holding Palmieri at knifepoint, saying he'd kill her, the OAG said.

Eventually, he tossed the knife back over his  shoulder, seeming to surrender — but when officers approached, he pulled out another, the office said.

Officers fired several bean-bags at Laniado, but he kept coming toward the officers with the knife until at least one opened fire, shooting multiple rounds at Laniado and killing him, the OAG said.

Laniado was taken by EMS to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where he was pronounced dead, the OAG said. Palmieri was taken into custody. No officers were injured. Both knives were recovered at the scene, the OAG said.

The second knife wielded by Laniado and recovered beside him after the shooting is a large karambit knife, a martial knife with a curved blade.

Authorities haven't said why they were looking to arrest Palmieri, or released the names of any of the involved officers.
