Christie, Booker Work Hard Despite Big Leads [AUDIO]

With about a month to go before the special U.S. Senate election, and less than two months before the general election, front-runners Cory Booker and Gov. Chris Christie continue to hold big leads in their respective races, but both continue to aggressively campaign anyway.

“For Gov. Christie, this election is also about looking ahead to 2016 and accomplishing two things – one is a win by 20 points in a blue state, the other one is he wants to win the Hispanic vote outright,” said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute.

“Those are two key calling cards he wants to take into 2016 to say that he’s the only republican who can win the White House, because he can win democratic voters and he can win Hispanics,” said Murray.

Republicans have been talking a lot lately about how they’ve been losing the ethnic vote and now they’re focusing on the Hispanic voting block. Murry said Christie wants to demonstrate he can win Hispanic votes in New Jersey, which would indicate he can win them nationwide.

As for Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who’s got a huge lead in the polls against Republican Steve Lonegan in the U.S. Senate race, why does he continue to work hard?

“It’s not clear exactly what the turnout is going to be. All the polling and the likely voting models are indicating that there are a lot of questions about exactly who’s going to come out,” said Murray.

He also said Booker enjoys campaigning, and has a solid financial base, so there’s no reason for him to not work hard to get his message out to the voters.
