The law, signed Friday, also bans transporting horses out of state to be slaughtered and the transport of horse meat for human consumption.

The horse is New Jersey's state animal.

The bill did not get much attention when it was passed in June, but it got a boost later from the daughter of one of Christie's idols.

Bruce Springsteen's 20-year-old daughter Jessica was among those who signed a letter urging Christie to enact the law.

The younger Springsteen is an accomplished equestrian, but her father's liberal politics often clash with the Republican Christie's.

Bruce Springsteen has never publicly acknowledged Christie.
