LAKEWOOD — A man was killed on Monday trying to cross Route 70 on his bicycle.

Lakewood Police said the 61-year-old man was struck by a 2014 Kia around 3:20 p.m. in the eastbound lanes at Buckingham Drive. It is the entrance into a 55-and-older adult community called Leisure Village.

The man disregarded a red light and rode directly into the Kia's path, and suffered significant injuries, according to police.

No charges have been filed in the case. Police did not disclose the name of the driver — a 38-year-old Toms River woman — or the bicyclist.

The initial investigation and clean up of the crash closed the road in both directions just west of the Garden State Parkway. The westbound side was reopened after about an hour but the eastbound lanes were closed for three hours.

Lakewood Police asked anyone who witnessed the crash to call them at 732-363-0200.
