Bankers Help Rebuild Sandy Ravaged Homes

Superstorm Sandy turns one year old on October 29th. In the almost 12 months since it came ashore, there are still thousands without a place to call home.

For the last four months, a contingent of bankers from the Jersey Shore banded together, armed with power tools, with one mission in mind: to get homes rebuilt and let people move back in.

A team from 27 banks in the Monmouth County area worked closely with Coastal Habitat for Humanity for their Shore cleanup from Asbury Park to Manasquan. Armed with hammers and donning helmets, the men and women worked tirelessly to get homes rebuild and ready.

Volunteers from First Choice Bank helped move 87-year-old Louise Kreslovic back into her home after a complete rebuild. They even purchased new appliances and bedding material for her as well.

John McWeeney is the President and CEO of The New Jersey Bankers Association. He says “I was so impressed with the outpouring of support. They should be proud of themselves. There’s still a lot more work to be done and we would love to get involved again next summer.”

McWeeney tells us a lot of the bankers had either been directly affected or knew people affected by the storm and wanted to do something to help.

In addition, the group managed to raise $20,000 for the rebuilding effort and put their own money into the pot to purchase the building materials.
