MORRIS TOWNSHIP — Additional police officers were on duty at Morris School District schools Monday after the discovery of a backpack filled with ammunition nearby.

Superintendent Mackey Pendergrast in a message on the district website said the bag was found near the Frelinghuysen Middle School in Veteran's Field on West Hanover Avenue over the weekend.

"We have not received any direct threat against FMS or any other school in our district we are proceeding with an abundance of caution," Pendergrast wrote.

Officers will maintain their presence throughout the day and during after school activities.

Morristown Police asked anyone with information about the backpack to call 973-538-2200.
