Baby Found Abandoned at Newark Bus Stop

Authorities are searching for whoever left an infant in a laundry basket at a bus stop near University Hospital in Newark.

The baby, who was wrapped in a blanket, was discovered by a passer-by around 6 a.m. Tuesday. City police officers and University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey police responded to the scene and brought the infant to the hospital's emergency pediatrics unit.

Further details on the child's condition were not immediately disclosed.

But Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio says the citizen's quick action saved the baby's life.
